About This Career Opportunity

A Medication Technician/Medications Assistant:

  • Responsible for dispensing resident’s medications, administering prescribed treatments, and maintaining medication documentation and control.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of safety procedures and precautions regarding the resident.
  • Identifies any side effects or problems, and reports refusals to Supervisor and physician.
  • Maintains thorough documents.
  • Participates in medication audits.


    Overview

    The Medication Technician/Medications Assistant is responsible for dispensing resident’s medications, administering prescribed treatments, and maintaining medication documentation and control.


    Responsibilities

    ECA Core Competencies

    • Consistently exhibits core competencies of: ECA Experience, Personal Appearance, Attendance, Resident Confidentiality, Licensing & Standards, In-service Education, Resident Compassion, and Safety.

    Medicine Preparation & Distribution

    • Prepares and passes medication for residents as ordered by a physician, reporting any medication errors, side effects or problems to supervisor or physician.
    • Documents administration or refusal of medication in required format and style.

    Medication Documentation

    • Maintains documentation and communication log in accordance with required procedures, using electronic system when appropriate.
    • Reorders meds as needed, following appropriate protocols.
    • Following medication policies and procedures is responsible for the delivery, ordering, re-ordering, storage, documentation and destruction of medications.
    • Insures that medication is available when needed through on time refills. Orders labs as necessary.

    Treatment Administration

    • Administers treatments in accordance with physician instructions.
    • Identifies any side effects or problems, and reports refusals to Supervisor and physician.

    Audits

    • Completes MAR reviews, audits and updates as per procedure.
    • Completes follow up to include items results from in house audits.

    Resident Safety

    • Demonstrates an understanding of safety procedures and precautions regarding the resident.
    • Reports all incidents, accidents, unsafe or hazardous conditions to appropriate personnel. Responds to emergency situations, following proper emergency protocol.
    • Takes vital signs and administers first aid in the event of illness.


      Qualifications

      Position Requirements

      • At least 18 years of age.
      • Cleared Criminal Record clearance through the Department of Social Services prior to presence in the community.
      • Health screening and TB test results not older than 6 months.
      • Current First Aid Training and Certifications as per Title 22.
      • Working knowledge of computers and typing, sufficient enough to be successful with computerized Point of Care and other systems.
      • 6 months or more in long term care, home care or related field preferred.

       Here’s what you need

      • Successful completion of Med Tech Training program.
      • Minimum of six months experience in long term care, home care, or a related field.
      • Working knowledge of computers and keyboarding in order to be successful with electronic health record systems.
      • Ability to speak, read, write and understand English and the ability to successfully work in a multi-cultural environment.
